Premiering in 2015 on the popular streaming service, Netflix, the newbie comedy series has quickly garnered a fan-base far more impressive than its mere two seasons on air would have you assume.
Created by and starring comedian Aziz Ansari, ‘Master of None’ brings a quirky, twisted, and wildly honest humour to the television arena. Targeted at millennials viewers, the series tackles twentysomething current issues like online dating, careers, family, and religious pressures–in a super endearing yet exciting way.
Standing at just 5’6” Ansari commands undivided attention onscreen as he goes through his fair share of comedic mishaps and misadventures as an actor in New York City. A semi-fictionalized version of himself, Ansari’s ‘Master of None’ is the first time the actor stands on his own comic feet.
The 34-year-old California native broke onto the television scene with his role as a wise-cracking hustling clerk at a small city Town Hall in the wildly popular series ‘Parks and Recreation’. As one of the most beloved characters on the show, Ansari used his sudden surge to fame to create his own series, ‘Master of None’, which was immediately received by audiences with rave reviews.
Although the series is, in its essence, a comedy series, Ansari attempts to address larger, and more socially charged issues, like the place of minorities in entertainment and show business. Ansari frequently incorporates his own Indian heritage into many of the plot lines with grace and dignity, always careful not to make the viewer feel as though there is an underlying or a too in-your-face-agenda..
After season one aired, audiences waited patiently for season two (a year and a half to be precise) which just premiered on Netflix, and viewers were not disappointed. Surprisingly intelligent, deep, raw, and innocent all at once, ‘Master of None‘ has an uncanny ability to suck viewers into its witty, wild, and surreal world full of pasta lovers, New York City, and love unrequited.
All the characters of the series are well thought out, intriguing, and carefully formed to both capture and maintain the audience’s attention and curiously.
All of season two is now available for streaming on Netflix. There is no word yet on the future of a third season for the series.
